NorCal’s November Fall Colors, Sunrises, And Sunsets…Unforgettable!

The days are short this month. The mornings are chilly. But the scenery is breathtaking! Taking a ride, walk, or hike in the Northern California outdoors will not be regretted. November sunrises, and sunsets are the most colorful of the entire year. The backdrop of a orange, red, and yellow sunset depict all the colors of Fall. This making for amazing outdoor photographs. It should be experienced at least once, by anybody living in Northern California. Personally it is my favorite time of year. Get outside and enjoy what Northern California has to offer you for absolutely free! The Northern California foothills will leave you a stunning sunset over the Sacramento Valley. Deep reds, subtle oranges, with purple, lavender, and magenta. Are frequently displayed in the minutes just before and just after sunset. We are very, very, fortunate to have such a beautiful outdoors here in Northern California. There are plenty of places to see free to the public and waiting for guests. Take the time to step away from work. The daily grind, and the stresses of every day living. Do yourself a favor and step outside. Go see something you haven’t seen yet.

While We Wait For The Upcoming Salmon Season!

The Fall Run Chinook Salmon season opener on the Sacramento River is just around the corner. Only less then a month away for Northern California anglers. Many fishermen eagerly await the July 16, 2019 opening day. With high expectations, considering all the hype and good press surrounding this years return of adult chinook salmon expected to return to spawn in Northern California and it’s major tributaries of the Sacramento Valley. Salmon fishing enthusiasts and sport fishing guides, as well as the owners of daily fishing charters, all make their necessary preparations to be ready for the upcoming salmon season. As a result of all this in house preparation and maintenance, Northern California rivers become very quiet. Boat traffic from anglers is minimal, and fishing takes a back seat to preparing for the arrival of the King Salmon. Fact of the matter is, some of the best fishing and fast action is to be had in this month prior to salmon season’s opening day.

Fishing for Sacramento River fish species such as trophy rainbow trout, post spawn and highly aggressive striped bass, and the “poor mans steelhead” ( American Shad ), offer fast action and lots of fun. Any or all of these species either fished for individually or in conjunction with each other will leave you more than satisfied with your time spent on the water. The high output Trophy Rainbow Trout and American Shad fisheries, that offer dozens of fish brought to the boat in a short time, are very popular with customers who have the desire to just “catch”. Early morning hours and the last hour before dark can also be rewarding. When targeting the highly aggressive and heavily feeding post spawn striped bass that have moved into the upper Sacramento River. Following the spring spawn down river near Colusa, Ca. Generally speaking from Woodson Bridge near Corning, Ca north to the canyon region of the Sacramento River. Including the communities of Bend, Ca and Cottonwood, Ca. Post spawn striped bass are even reported being caught farther up the Sacramento River near the city of Anderson, Ca. Where local angler Jeremy Ross hs been producing quality stripers on the fly ( imitation juvenile salmon fly patterns can be purchased locally at The Fly Shop theflyshop.com in Redding, Ca ) and on top water baits like the Zara Spook heddonlures.com . The majority of his success has centered around the Interstate 5 bridge over the Sacramento River just North of Anderson, Ca.

Fly fishing has become very popular when targeting striped bass on the Sacramento River in the summer months following the spring spawn.

American Shad!! All You Want!!

If you enjoy fishing as a sport, past time, or as a escape from the daily grind, you share common ground with millions of fellow Americans. You are part of the most popular sport in this country. As anglers we target many different species of fish, and fish in various bodies of water. Fresh water, salt water, rivers, lakes, and streams. Success isn’t guaranteed and varies from trip to trip. The commonly used phase “it’s called fishing, not catching” is used throughout the fishing communities when success is non existent. “You should have been here yesterday”, also a popular phase used for a tough day spent on the water. Although unsuccessful fishing trips happen and are a reality of the sport we all enjoy, success in fishing is just as much a part of the sport. These are the days we choose to remember and the reason for returning to the water to fish again.

When it comes to just wanting to catch fish for the sake of getting a rod bent, to feel the head shake, to hear the drag pulling, and in today’s case for a photo that can be shared to social media platforms. The hard fighting and very plentiful American Shad are hard to beat. Migrating annually from the Pacific Ocean into the major tributaries of the Sacramento Valley like the Sacramento, American and Feather Rivers. This East Coast transplant called ( “bunker” ), can be found in very large numbers as they gather to spawn here in Northern California. Not to mention they are extremely fun to catch. Related to the herring family they are hard fighting, plentiful; these fish provide more than enough action to keep fishing enthusiast of all skill levels grinning from ear to ear. Fast and consistent action make targeting these fish great for children and new comers to the sport. Providing plenty of steady action, keeping anglers entertained and more than happy to return to the water for more action. American Shad aren’t known for their table fare and are considered more of a catch and release fish species on most accounts. As far as just catching fish while out fishing, the American Shad are hard to beat.

2019 Salmon Season Looking Promising!

Northern California salmon anglers have a reason to get excited about the upcoming 2019 salmon season on the Sacramento River and Feather River, here in the North State. A very positive “fall run chinook salmon” abundance report has been released by the PMF (Pacific Marine Fisheries) this spring. Forecasting much higher run returns to the interior Sacramento Valley and its major tributaries. Great and exciting news for sport fishing guides and recreational anglers looking to target the chinook salmon in Northern California rivers this upcoming 2019 salmon season. Scheduled to start on July 16, 2019 for the Sacramento River and Feather River. Running consecutively through the season closure dates of October 31, 2019 on the Feather River, and December 16, 2019 on the Sacramento River. As added confirmation to the expected higher then usual number of returning fall run chinook salmon into Northern California water ways. The CDFW ( California Department of Fish and Wildlife ) https://www.wildlife.ca.gov/fishing/ocean/regulations/salmon has doubled the daily bag and possession limits for returning king salmon for Northern California anglers. Allowing two king salmon per day per person and a possession limit of four king salmon per person for anglers fishing more then one day at a time.
