Sacramento River Fishing Report For: King Salmon August 11, 2019

“The good news is that we are catching salmon every day still.” Continued reports by salmon fishing guide Mike Rasmussen say that he, and fishing guide Ryan Tripp are still putting chrome king salmon in the fish box daily. They are using both cured salmon roe and sardine wrapped Kwikfish, as well as a handful of his salmon being caught on 5.0 and 4.5 maglips. This seems to be the buz around the Sacramento River fishing community. Maglips seems to be the hot item this season. After witnessing the success that Sacramento River salmon fishing guides Ryan Tripp and Mike Rasmussen had using them during the 2018 season, as well as the first couple weeks of this 2019 salmon season. “They make it easy!” Says, veteran fishing guide Mike Rasmussen in explaining the effectiveness and simplicity reguarding fishing maglip lures as opposed to traditional Kwikfish and Flatfish. “Maglips help people who struggle with their lure, game catch…period!!” Says, fishing guide Rasmussen. Rasmussen reports that now, almost all boat angler carry them on board. Guides and recreational anglers alike. Despite all efforts and time spent back trolling lures of any kind, drifting cured salmon roe seems to be the most successful method of take this past week. The chrome salmon are easily spooked, and seem to run away from the noise and commotion that the back trolled lures produce. Not to say, but some salmon fishing guides aren’t having luck with them. Dragging roe is just getting it done faster, for the majority of anglers.

This season is shaping up to be exactly how CDFW (California Department Fish & Wildlife) predicted. A large, abundant return of Fall Run Chinook Salmon into the Sacramento River system. The majority of Chinook Salmon returning to the river are three year olds. Averaging 16 to 22 pounds respectively. With some four year old returning salmon already showing up. Salmon fishing guide Big John Anos gave social media a peak at an almost 30 pound king salmon he caught up in the canyon region earlier this week. Big John caught the hefty king using his favorite “cling-on” Kwikfish, wrapped with sardine. It is still too early to be certain if predictions by agency officials are going to be accurate. However, at this point it looks promising. Only time will tell, as the season progresses.

Reports from down river near Verona, Ca the past few days have been promising. As well as reports of salmon being caught from Knights Landing, Ca to Colusa, Ca. This past week on the Sacramento River we have been shown a strong movement of fresh king salmon headed up river. Destined for the cold water found between Woodson Bridge in Corning, Ca and the Barge Hole in Cottonwood, Ca. This is where the fall run Chinook Salmon stage up, while waiting to spawn later in the fall in November. The fish that are showing up now are dime bright, and exceptionally strong fighters. It is a matter of quality, over quantity at this piont in the salmon season. Later in the season it will be vise versa. The pictures posted by salmon fishing guides and sport fishermen say it all. The proof of exceptional quality is clearly seen in these photos.
