A solid start to the 2019 Sacramento River Fall Run Chinook Salmon season is underway. The projection of having a bumper year of returning three year old Chinook Salmon to Northern California waterways. May have not been to far fetched. Wildlife officials returned the two fish daily bag limit to the Sacramento River system earlier this year. On the projection of a larger then normal return of adult (spawning) Chinook Salmon. Judging from how the season appears to be shaping up at this piont. I’d say there is a fair chance their projection of a higher returning run of Chinook Salmon is very probable.

Guest “Dave” from Kalama, Wa caught his first salmon in a decade this past week while on the SalmonSacRiver.com fishing charter. Fishing out of the Red Bluff, Ca Diversion Dam boat launch facility (sycamore grove). Sacramento River salmon fishing guide Ryan Tripp put Dave on the first fish of the day. July 28, 2019.

Fishing guides that took to the local waterways of the Sacramento River and Feather River found decent success for their clients this past week. The general consensus of the salmon fishing that took place this past week would have to be considered, good salmon fishing. Will the salmon fishing get better? Yes. Are the days hot and long? Yes. Are the quality of the salmon being caught any good? ABSOLUTELY! Yes, a month from now the salmon fishing will be “wide open” and more fish will be caught daily by local salmon fishing guides. But you will not see the quality of salmon then, as you will right now. The salmon coming a month from now will still be bright and cut orange, certainly. But there is just something about the salmon that come through in the first couple weeks of the season. Much more aggressive and definitely a more wild ride then the later arriving salmon. These early arrivals of Fall Run Chinook Salmon are no joke. Period! When using lures the bite is generally viscous. When dragging cured salmon roe (“bait”), the fight on lighter spinning tackle can seemingly take for ever for the dime bright salmon to finialy give up just enough to make it into the net. There is just something about them. Clients light up, when hooked up. The astonished look after the longer then usual wait to hook up one of these king salmon becomes a instant and overwhelming experience. When they suddenly find one bucking on the end of their rod with great veracity and strength. The quality of salmon has been illustrated on social media this week as client pictures have been blasted on all public platforms. The photos have been stunning! Dime bright king salmon that appear to be only days out of the salt, are being shown off daily by fishing guides. Both on the Feather River and across the valley on the Sac side (Sacramento River). Although the majority of the salmon fishing by salmon fishing guides has been taking place on the Sacramento River. Between Hamilton City, Ca and the up river closing piont of the Red Bluff, Ca Diversion Dam.

Salmon fishing guide Mike Rasmussen worked the daily fishing charter on July 27, 2019 for a young couple that booked a daily salmon fishing trip on the Sacramento River near Los Molinos, Ca. The first ever salmon for this gal came while back trolling a sardine wrapped K16 Kwikfish.

A fair mix of fishing guides have been sharing equal success on the Sacramento River by both running plugs (Kwikfish or Flatfish), and dragging bait. Basically decided by the individual fishing guides personal preference. Both meathods have been producing equal results for the most part. A honest and accurate one fish a rod average has been the usual take on the daily fishing charters. Primarily focusing their efforts around the Red Bluff, Ca region of the Sacramento River. Long, extremely hot days, have made salmon fishing this past week hard on the die hards. Pushing on their efforts after the 12:00pm noon hour. Temperatures reaching 108 degrees made it hard on clients and the fishing guides themselves as they continued searching for these elusive early arriving kings. In the end when that chrome, crazy, king salmon jumps on your rod, you forget about all the heat, the waiting, and the anticipation. All that maters at that particular moment in time is….getting that sucker in the net.

Kids had a blast this week as well. Bringing in chrome bright king salmon like the one pictured above. Caught on a father/son fishing trip booked at SalmonSacRiver.com. For a daily fishing charter out of Red Bluff, Ca on July 26, 2019. Salmon fishing with Sacramento River Fishing Guide Ryan Tripp.
